What is the Canada Dental Care Plan (CDCP)?

The Canada Dental Care Plan (CDCP) is a federal program that provides financial support to help individuals meet their oral health requirements and gain access to basic dental services, including cleanings, exams, fillings, and more, regardless of their financial situation. The purpose of the Canada Dental Care Plan (CDCP) is to help all individuals and families across Canada receive the timely dental care services they need without consideration of their income or financial status.

The program is intended to support low- and middle-income Canadians; it covers a wide range of dental services and eliminates the cost factor, allowing families to avoid compromising their oral health. The CDCP has recently expanded eligibility, allowing eligible individuals to access the CDCP’s comprehensive coverage benefits package for preventive dental care and urgent dental services.

Who Qualifies for the Canada Dental Care Plan (CDCP)?

Individuals who are eligible to be covered through the CDCP include:

  • Adults who are 65 years of age and older.
  • Children under 18 years of age are eligible for coverage.
  • Adults who possess a federally valid Disability Tax Credit certificate are also eligible.
  • Canadians aged 18 to 64 without dental insurance are also eligible to apply as of May 2025.

Criteria for CDCP Qualification

To qualify for the Canadian Dental Care Plan, the applicant must satisfy all of the Client Eligibility Criteria:

  • Does not have access to dental insurance from any employment, pension, or private plans.
  • Has an adjusted family net income under $90,000.
  • Is a Canadian resident for tax purposes.
  • Has filed taxes for the previous year.

Every individual must satisfy each of the eligibility conditions listed above to be covered under the CDCP.

What if You Already Have Dental Coverage

If you’re already enrolled in dental coverage through a province, territory, or the federal government’s dental program, the Canada Dental Care Plan (CDCP) may also be available to you for dental coverage. If you meet eligibility criteria for coverage, the CDCP will work together with any applicable government plans to provide you with 100% coverage with no overlapping payments and no gaps during the benefit period. The arrangement will establish a clear path to access dental care to make everything as easy and convenient as possible to ensure you are not unable to seek dental care due to any confusion about coverage.

How Much Coverage Can You Receive Under the Canada Dental Care Plan?

The extent of coverage provided by the Canada Dental Care Plan (CDCP) is determined by your family’s income. To figure out co-payments, find your adjusted family net income on the chart below:

  • If the income is less than $70,000: 100% coverage of the eligible cost according to the established fee; your share of the cost is 0%.
  • If the income is between $70,000-$79,999: 60% coverage of the eligible cost according to the established fee; your share of the cost is 40%.
  • If the income is between $80,000-$89,999: 40% coverage of the eligible cost according to the established fee; your share of the cost is 60%.

Your co-payment is always calculated based on your adjusted family net income. If your dentist charges more than the established fee of the Canada Dental Care Plan (CDCP), or if you receive services that are not covered by the CDCP, you will be liable for those additional costs.

Additional Costs

There will be a cost to you if your dentist charges more than what is covered by the Canada Dental Care Plan (CDCP).

  • You choose a dental treatment not covered by the plan
  • Your dental treatment costs exceed the established fee by the Canada Dental Care Plan (CDCP)

Before starting treatment, make sure to check with your dentist about any additional costs that you may incur as an out-of-pocket expense.

How to Apply for the Canada Dental Care Plan

It is easy to apply for the Canada Dental Care Plan (CDCP). Here’s a step-by-step guide:

  • Determine Your Eligibility: Just enter your name, date of birth, social insurance number, address, and other information requested by CDCP at the CDCP official website.
  • Get Your Code: If you are eligible, you will be sent a code for your application and will receive instructions, either via mail or e-mail.
  • File Your Application: Use the code to apply online or via one of the other options. You can get the application status immediately.
  • Enrollment: Once authorized, your details will be transmitted to the Sun Life, and you will be allowed to use the dental services under the program.

Providing as much accurate information as possible during the process will allow approval in a timely manner and a potentially easier enrollment process.

What Dental Services are Covered by the CDCP?

Canada Dental Care Plan (CDCP) covers numerous dental services to maintain the health of your teeth and gums. If you need help paying for dental fees and do not have private dental insurance, the CDCP may help with some costs related to the following:

  • Preventative care, including regular checkups, cleanings, fluoride treatments, and sealants
  • Diagnostic services such as dental exams and x-rays
  • Restorative care, such as fillings and crowns
  • Endodontic procedures such as root canals
  • Prosthodontic services, including dentures and partial dentures
  • Periodontal care to maintain gum health and treat gum disease
  • Oral surgery, including tooth extraction and other oral surgery procedures considered necessary

* Important to note: Certain types of treatment may need pre-approval, and coverage may vary depending on the situation, as well as the recommendations of your dentist.
